Mesmerizing – Germain ACOGNY
I trekked to Paris for inspiration and found it amongst many places and people, but surely Germain Agogny is the most inspirational!
Dancer and educator Germaine Acogny, dubbed “the mother of contemporary African dance”, has always cultivated ties between Africa and Europe. Her school near Dakar trains young African dancers and promotes encounters with artists from around the world. This same collaborative spirit informs her new solo Songook Yaakaar. For the first time Acogny enlists words, contributed by leading socially-engaged Senegalese writers, to reference current affairs. With choreography by Pierre Doussaint, another fiercely generous artist. [Mezzo]
