My estranged city of birth is winning me over with affordable European style lodging, improved metro service and a lively downtown night life.

MegaBus express service from new hubs in Oakland,  San Francisco and Los Angeles with advance fares as low as $1.00 (one dollar) make frequent trips to SoCal a breeze.  It is a pleasure and delight to roll along Highway 5 taking in the scenery and leaving the driving to a professional.  The bus from Oakland departs from the West Oakland BART station and terminates at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

L.A. public transportation has improved considerably over the years and Union Station is the perfect place to get your bearings upon arrival.  L.A. Metro offers an economical $5 day pass that allows unlimited rides on the subway and buses.  The bus and metro night services still leaves a lot to be desired so I recommend reserving a Zipcar for late night transportation.

European Style Lodging

On a recent trip to SoCal I discovered an economical and convenient place for lodging less than 2 miles from Union Station.  I recommend budget travelers consider Stay On Main Hotel.  For room rates and other details log on here.
